Welcome to the Nordic Institute on Åland (NIPÅ)!

The institute is a cultural institution subject to the Nordic Council of Ministers (NMR). The Institute’s remit is to strengthen Åland’s cultural life through contacts with other Nordic countries and by working with local cultural figures, and to present Åland’s culture in other parts of the Nordic region.
NIPÅ, which was established in May 1985, works closely with its four sister organisations, the Nordic Houses on the Faroe Islands and Iceland and The Nordic Institutes in Greenland and in Finland.
The Nordic Institute's office is at Elverksgatan 10 in Mariehamn. You are welcome to visit us and find out all about our work. Currently we have 4 employees.

Activities

The Nordic Institute operates according to a three-year rota of programme periods. In 2009-2011 our agenda will focus on five areas of culture: children´s and youth culture, cultural exchange, cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, local culturepoint and  cultural exchange with Balticum .
The Institute has a broad cultural profile; our inspiration, as well as the people we work with, come from all parts of the Nordic region.

Our ambition is to achieve a higher degree of professionalism in Åland’s cultural life through joint projects and by helping artists from other parts of the Nordic region to come and perform or exhibit on Åland. Raising the profile of Åland’s culture in other Nordic regions is another key focus of the Institute’s work.

The Institute also provides support for amateur and grassroots projects in the form of financial assistance and advice, and by providing contacts.

Board of Governors

The Institute’s Board of Governors is appointed by NMR and consists of representatives from all Nordic countries. During the period 1.1.2009-31.12.2010 the Institute's Board consists of the following members: Sweden, Åland Islands, Finland and Denmark. Deputy members are Iceland and Norway.
