Four artists, four expressions, four temperaments

This year's summer exhibition at the Nordic Institute on Åland is presented by Galleri Skarpans, which shows four artists working in Åland; Olivia Dansdotter Sarling, Anette Gustafsson, Johan Karlsson and Jonas Wilén. The artists meet in a changing exhibition between different artistic expressions and materials and together show an insight into contemporary art on Åland.

Olivia Sarling - art forger

Easy to fly with iron wings. Since the end of my forging education, I have integrated wings in my works in various ways, perhaps as an unconscious symbol that I will soon have to throw myself out and try my own out in the forging world. The wings have been shown solely to give a sense of proportion. In these works, the wings have been given a body to carry. I also like to give everyday things an iron body, and in that way turn something mundane and practical into something decorative and teasingly useless. By and large, I simply do not get tired of experimenting, and what happens in the forge is not always something that can be predicted!

Anette Gustafsson - painting

I show soft, dreamlike landscapes in watercolor from the Åland archipelago. The light playing over warm cliffs, a sailboat looming on the horizon on the ever-present sea. Some pictures are underwater landscapes where the perch grass slowly swayed in the intense blue-green swell.

Johan Karlsson - iron sculpture

I show animals from recycled scrap metal, both large and small sculptures. My expression moves in a borderland; what happens to the hardness of the metal when it is transformed into an animal? What happens to the metal in the encounter with the soft sculptural form that my animal sculptures often have?

Jonas Wilén - painting

I show new oil paintings, watercolors and drawings. The oil painting is a mixture of imaginative motifs and more abstract expressions, inspired by the exhibition's basic idea with different temperaments. It is a continuation of my latest exhibition where I was looking for pictures in my interior.
