Nuka Alice in Åland for Drum Concert, the Nordic Institute in Åland

An evening with Greenlandic drumdancing

Greenlandic drum dance has been around for thousands of years and is an important element of Greenlandic culture. The sacred drum dances are played on an oval drum, a wooden frame with a bear's bladder over. The drum dance originated in the Inuit culture and was almost forgotten for many years. In recent decades, however, the drum dance has been revived in Greenland and the younger generation is now also showing interest in this magical cultural element.

Now you have the opportunity to experience an evening of stories about the various traditional and new drum songs by drum dancer Nuka Alice Lund from Sisimiut in Greenland.

"It is not easy to learn drum dance," says Nuka Alice, who during the evening will give us a personal insight into how she herself learned drum dance. She offers stories that will undoubtedly touch. Drum dance is based on an understanding of wholeness, of love, of doubt, of respect, speed and the importance of people in unison.

Warm welcome to a very special evening where you get to both experience and create an understanding of a piece of forgotten Greenlandic culture.
