moonshiners, salaviinanpolttajat

The Moonshiners (FI) screening and live music at Stadshuset

A remake of a silent film of the first Finnish film ever made

Finnish Juho Kuosmanen - the man behind the film The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki (Un Certain Regard prize winner in Cannes 2016) is now back with a silent film - a remake of the first Finnish film ever made!

The Moonshiners (Salaviinanpolttajat) was the first ever fiction film made in Finland in 1907. Unfortunately all of copies of the film have been lost. The only clue Juho Kuosmanen had to the contents of the film was found in a newspaper advertisement dating back 110 years. The new version is made in the authentic silent film style (shot in 16mm black and white film).

On Friday, February 23rd we have the honor to have in screening Kuosmanen's film The Moonshiners and his previous silent film Scrap Mattila & a Beautiful Woman (Romu-Mattila ja kaunis nainen, 2012), both films are performed with live music by Ykspihlajan Kino-orkesteri and with live foleys by artist Heikki Kossi in Mariehamn City Hall.
